Several reviewers (including Michael O'Sullivan in the Washington Post, Walter Addiego in the San Francisco Chronicle, and Marjorie Baumgarten in the Austin Chronicle) mistakenly identified this movie as taking place during the early 1980s. But there are numerous in-movie reasons that this can't be true, including Sarah's 1990s-style camcorder, the advertisements visible as the family drives through Times Square, and the radio station advertising "hits of the '70s, '80s, and '90s." The fact that the family goes to see E.T. - L'extra-terrestre (1982) does not mean that the movie had to be set in 1982; E.T. has been re-released into theaters several times since then, and in any case there are many revival houses and film archive theaters in New York City that show old movies.
