The films commerical and critical failure as well as that of The Stupids (1996) and Carpool (1996) also released in the same year could possibly be attributed to Tom Arnold's reputation in the press at the time. Although Rick Mornais was still a fairly popular actor at the time and Arnold had some huge success in True Lies (1994) the aftermath in his divorce from Roseanne Barr and his personal life were ridiculed strongly in the media and he was no longer considered a box office draw as he had been briefly with roles in True Lies and Nine Months (1995).
