This story draws on Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novella Young Goodman Brown; which also views an idyllic eastern community through a funhouse mirror. There is a similar phantasmagoric scene at the center of both; the black mass in Rosemary's Baby; and the Satanic Orgy in Young Goodman Brown; where the protagonist sees everyone that they know in a context they never have before; and it makes them question everything in the their life. Both scenes are meant to appear dreamlike; you are never sure if they are completely real or not; and they see everyone they thought was a good person at this diabolical gathering; in a dark Satanic light; and both stories are meant to make you question whether or not it's true or a facet of the protagonists' insanity. They are also both about the duality of nature; and the hypocrisy of the upper crust society and their phony virtuous images and reputations.
