Robert Blake stated in an interview that Jack Benny was not happy with Alexis Smith as his leading lady and had lobbied Warner Brothers for a different actress. Whether or not this was partially based on the difference in their ages is unclear. Although in Heaven they were undoubtedly Platonic lovers, in 1945 Jack Benny was 51, Alexis Smith 24.
