When this show was renewed for its twenty-first season, it beat the record for longest running live-action prime-time series originally set by Gunsmoke (1955). However, Gunsmoke (1955) still holds the record for most episodes at six hundred thirty-five due to a longer production run, and SVU will not surpass that number until its twenty-ninth season (if each season maintains an episode count of 22).
