Gillian kills Childress in very violent scenes in the book and movie. In the book she viciously drowns him. In the movie she blows him up, ala Scanners. DePalma changed this because spontaneous human combustion is much more impressive on the screen than drowning. The scene where Gillian kills Childress by exploding him (after seducing him) is the counterpoint to Robin killing his lover Suzie by spinning her around and around until she explodes in blood.
