Although having a big part in this movie and the two sequels, Azog the Orc is long dead at the start of the book, only mentioned once as the killer of Thrór (Thorin's grandfather). According to the Appendices of the Lord of the Rings novels, Azog killed Thrór when the latter had wandered into the Orc-infested mines of Moria alone. This led to a nine-year war between Dwarves and Orcs that culminated in the Battle of Azanulbizar outside the gates of Moria, where Azog was killed by Thorin's second cousin Dáin. The movie depicts the battle but has Azog only lose an arm (to Thorin instead of Dain), making him one of the returning villains in the trilogy instead.
