In 1999, Warner Bros. hired Darren Aronofsky to write and direct Batman: Year One, which was to be the fifth movie in the Batman franchise. Aronofsky brought Frank Miller to co-write Year One with him. Aronofsky collaborator Matthew Libatique was set as cinematographer. Also, he wanted to shoot the movie in Tokyo, doubling for Gotham City. Aronofsky wanted to cast Clint Eastwood for the role of Batman. However, Warner Bros. was not happy with the script, due to the differences from the source material, and did not greenlight the movie.
