Director Ali Abbasi told HuffPost that he changed Saeed Hanaei's last name in the film and fictionalized some facts about the real-life female journalist who tracked the case to draw attention away from the actual people and to his overall theme [misogyny]. Most notably, Abbasi and his team portray Rahimi going undercover as a sex worker to try to catch the killer in the act. The real-life journalist didn't do this. Abbasi also said that one important narrative decision was to not to make a movie about another serial killer, but make a movie about a serial killer society.
