In 2008 New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. refused to pay the Tolkien estate money owed (which included funds for The Lord of the Rings). What followed was two and a half years of disagreement, which not only sent this movie into development discourse, but caused Guillermo del Toro to leave the production. To make matters worse, legal issues would have taken the production out of New Zealand entirely. Only when Sir Peter Jackson decided to return as director in late 2009 was an agreement reached.
