Russell Mulcahy had plenty of music-industry contacts with his background in directing promos: when he discussed the movie with Sting, Sting suggested Clancy Brown for the Kurgan as they had worked together on La sposa promessa (1985). According to Brown, he received no salary for his part in the film.
