The series was a moderate hit during its first two seasons, and received a ratings boost when The Cosby Show first became Family Ties lead in show for season three. Michael J Fox's breakout popularity upon the release of Back To The Future, released shortly after the show's third season, resulted in increase attention, and success for the show.
