One of the film's subplots is that the spirit of Joseph Curwen misses his beloved mistress, Hester Tillinghast. A century after her death, Joseph tries to resurrect her, using various rituals. The subplot seems to have recycled ideas from the horror film "The Mummy" (1932), where an Egyptian priest is determined to resurrect his beloved mistress, Princess Ankh-esen-amun.
