In the novel, Broughton played the Assistant Police Commissioner, who had aspirations of higher office, and got himself appointed head of the task force to solve the murders, the first of which was a prominent NY City politician. All of the political subtext of the novel was eliminated. In the book. Delaney took a leave of absence ostensibly to look after his wife, but was asked to investigate the crime privately by insiders in the police department, which he did successfully, causing political damage to Broughton.
