(at around 33 mins) The scene where Buffalo Bill traps Catherine Martin is inspired by Ted Bundy. In the movie scene Buffalo Bill, AKA Jame Gumb, pretends to be a crippled person trying to move a couch, in a street where he knows Catherine Martin happens to be watching. He limps along in the street, fake-struggling with the couch, until Ms. Martin finally offers him help to lift it up into his van. She goes in first at his request, and then when he sees she's cornered in the back of the van he suddenly slams the door on her and drives off. This is taken from various true life accounts about Bundy faking a broken arm whilst trying to carry some books. He would drop the books as part of the charade, and some woman watching the whole time would offer to help him carry stuff to his car or his house, at which point he would capture the woman much like Buffalo Bill in the movie.
