Up until 1983, Coronation Street had featured at least four original cast members for its entire history. Then, in October 1983, within the space of just three months, Doris Speed went on sick leave and was never well enough to return, Patricia Phoenix, who played Elsie Tanner, left the show and Jack Howarth, who played Albert Tatlock, had made his last appearance, having fallen ill and subsequently never returning to filming before his death in May that year.
