Originally the studio hired director Dwight H. Little to direct the film but had a decision to make as he was also offered Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home (1995) at the same time. Little chose to do Free Willy 2 for Warner Bros. figuring it would be highly successful like the original film. Fox then hired John Woo for the film since he was the perfect director for a film of this nature.
