When Jonathan Mostow pulled out of the project in May 2006, Gabriele Muccino, who previously directed Will Smith in La ricerca della felicità (2006), was attached to direct. While Pursuit was being edited, Smith went to work on Io sono leggenda (2007). By October 2006, Muccino left the project due to creative differences with the studio, allowing Peter Berg to come on as director.
