David Harewood has stated that he was initially cast to play a straightforward version of Hank Henshaw for the pilot, with the possibility of the character turning into his villainous alter ego, Cyborg Superman at some point. However, while watching the completed pilot, one of the producers said that it was a shame that Harewood was already playing Henshaw, because he'd make a great J'onn J'onzz/Martian Manhunter. This is what lead to the decision to make Henshaw really J'onzz in disguise, with the real Henshaw/Cyborg Superman appearing further down the track, also played by Harewood.
