In the episode where Ted (Josh Radnor) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) break up, Robin finds a ring in her champagne glass. Robin, thinking it's from Ted, freaks out at the thought of him proposing to her. However, it's quickly pointed out by the waiter that the ring actually belongs to the man at the table next to them. This man grabs the ring and proposes to his girlfriend. This was, in fact, an actual proposal; the man planned it with the producers and now the couple's engagement lives on forever in the series.
