In this film, Octavian, Mark Anthony, and Marcus Aemilius Lepidus represent the Triumvirate. This is the historical Second Triumvirate (43-32 BC), a political alliance between three men claiming leadership over the political faction that had been formed by Julius Caesar. They ruled the Roman Republic in its dying days, as a military dictatorship. They divided the country's provinces among them. The alliance ended due to political in-fighting. Lepidus was stripped of all his offices in 36 BC, while Octavian and Anthony were preparing their resources for an eventual confrontation against each other. Their rivalry led to the War of Actium (32-30 BC), to the demise of Anthony and Cleopatra, and to the victorious Octavian transforming the Republic into the new Roman Empire.
