Goldie Hawn was also offered the role of Alice Newton and was interested in playing the part as she had previously co-starred with Charles Grodin in Bastano tre per fare una coppia (1980) but she was forced to turn it down because she had agreed to co-star in the film Moglie a sorpresa (1992) for director Frank Oz which was released two months after Beethoven and also distributed by Universal Pictures. Her co-star in that film was Steve Martin who also declined to play George Newton because of his commitment to the other film.
