The film's $33.5 million budget, notwithstanding the fact that it was originally intended for a theatrical release, makes "Theodore Rex" the second most expensive direct-to-video movie ever. It holds the record behind Jean-Claude Van Damme's first direct-to-video movie, The Legionary - Fuga all'inferno (1998) which had a $35 million budget (and coincidentally was also originally intended for a theatrical release).
