MGM had bought the rights to the Selma Lagerlof book at the time that actor Victor Sjostrom had directed an American version for them in Hollywood (The Tower of Lies) .The studio gave permission for this Swedish remake, two decades later, only under the condition that the new film would not be distributed outside of the Scandinavian countries.
