The film was originally set to premiere in December 1996. Hopes were that SONY would give it an Oscar campaign, Johnny Depp for Best Actor, Al Pacino and Anne Heche for Best Supporting Actor and Actress, with Mike Newell for Director, but the film was pushed back to February 1997.
