The plot of the film is similar to a real-life incident that occurred in 2003 to pizza delivery man Brian Douglass Wells, depicted in Evil Genius: la vera storia della rapina più diabolica d'America (2018). The writers said they only had "vague knowledge" of this case before writing. Wells's sister publicly lambasted the film saying she doesn't 'think it's funny to laugh at the innocent who are victimized by criminals, who care nothing for human life."
