The box office receipts were less than expected, so George Lucas continued Willow's story in books rather than in movie sequels. The three books are collectively known as "The Chronicles of the Shadow War" and share a writer's credit for famous X-Men writer Chris Claremont and Lucas. They are "Shadow Moon", "Shadow Dawn", and "Shadow Star", published in 1995, 1996 and 2000 respectively. These books are generally disliked by fans of the film due to their bleak tone and the quick deaths of certain characters from the film. Lucas himself had been busy with the production of Star Wars: Episodio I - La minaccia fantasma (1999) so wasn't able to be very involved with the writing process and had only provided Claremont an outline for the series. He admitted that he was so unhappy with how the books turned out that he disowned them.
