In an interview on Entertainment Tonight: Iconic TV Dads Week - Day 2 (2022) of Entertainment Tonight (1981), Reginald VelJohnson revealed that Sgt. Al Powell was originally going to be played by Gene Hackman, but for unknown reasons the casting fell through. The casting department then decided to aim for a then unknown actor, coming down to VelJohnson and Wesley Snipes.
