Dr Chilton's recording device, which he uses to surreptitiously record Lecter's and Starling's conversations at the Baltimore Hospital for the Criminally Insane, is a Nagra SNST spy recorder which was widely used by the CIA and Mossad in the 1960s and 1970s. The device was specifically developed for covert use, and was deliberately made to be compact and concealable in a pocket or bag. The mechanism is also extremely quiet, which adds value to its intended purpose. In the present day, Nagra recorders are no longer manufactured and are highly sought after by audiophiles. Working examples can sell for several thousands of pounds/dollars.
