The time period between Star Trek (2009) and this film is covered by a comic book series published by IDW. The stories have all been retelling of episodes from the original series but placed into the new time line and circumstances created by the events of the first film. Two of those stories concerned the crew's encounters with Tribbles and with Harcourt Mudd or, in the new time line, his daughter. Both of these stories were not only told on the original series but were revisited on the animated series. Both stories also are referenced here (the "Mudd Incident" and the Tribbles in Dr. McCoy's medical bay), foreshadowing that this film would also revisit a story from the original series: Star Trek: Space Seed (1967). In Star Trek: Mudd's Women (1966), Mudd originally uses a false identity, just as Khan does here.
