Various historians have tried to find proof that the awning in the Colosseum really was used as a cooling system. Coins and other images of the amphitheater have been found showing a canopy system. In May 1998, a few scientists on PBS's NOVA series constructed two different canopy systems on an ancient amphitheater. One of those designs appears to be the inspiration for the canopy system seen in this movie.
