It is very possible the Prince while a beast was gradually transforming into a full beast until he repented. For example when he confronts Maurice he walks on all fours like a normal animal. And he even growls like a lion or tiger at times too. And when he has breakfast with Belle he eats in a slobbering manner, implying he had forgotten how to eat like a human. However as he grows close to Belle he behaves more human like implying his kindness was stopping him being completely transformed into a beast, although the spell couldn't be broken until he won Belle's affection.
