Larry Hagman has admitted that he was drunk most of the time while filming the show (reportedly routinely downing champagne as though it were cherry Kool-Aid). Throughout the series in many of his closeups, you can see his eyes are bloodshot, glazed or glassy. It was likely not noticeable on the TV screens of the 1960s, but digital technology makes obvious the scenes where he just didn't look well.
