The Battle of Stalingrad, now Volgograd, in southern Russia, the then Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, was fought between the 23rd of August 1942 to the 2nd of February 1943. Considered the bloodiest of all battles because of its reputation of fierce close-quarters combat and direct assaults on civilians in air raids, where at least two million people died and the annihilation and destruction of the German 6th Army; a field army unit of the German Wehrmacht during World War II.
