Like the character of Dutch Velders, Sanjay Desai is a completely original character created for the show. However, unlike Dutch, Desai is based directly on an existing character in the novels, Everett Barnes. Barnes is only a minor antagonist in the first season of the show, but in the novels he manages the Blood Farms and serves as The Master's most trusted human co-conspirator, a role that Desai fills in season 4.
