Producer Jonathon Sanger was working as an assistant director on Mel Brooks' film High Anxiety in 1977. The baby-sitter for Sanger's children asked if she could give him a script that her boyfriend, Christopher De Vore had wrote with his writing partner Eric Bergren. That script was entitled, The Elephant Man. Sanger read the script, enjoyed it, and gave it to Mel Brooks, who decided to allow Sanger to produce the film, with Brooks serving as an executive producer. At the same time, Sanger had seen David Lynch's feature debut, Eraserhead, which he enjoyed. Sanger set up a meeting with Lynch with the intention to just meet the man behind the strange film, but in the process had told him about a screenplay that he was looking to produce. Lynch asked Sanger what the title was, to which Sanger responded "The Elephant Man". Lynch's interest was immediately piqued, and after he read the script, expressed interest to direct the film. Mel Brooks had never heard of David Lynch, so he set up a screening of Lynch's Eraserhead. Brooks loved the film, after the screening proclaiming to the young director, "You're a madman". David Lynch was then hired as the director of the film and production was green-lit.
