For several years the series was sponsored by a tobacco company and writers were urged to put as much smoking in the stories as possible (sometimes to absurdity). Yet Barbara Hale is never shown smoking, even though she was a smoker in private life and did some cigarette commercials. In fact, her character, Della Street, even mentioned smoking only once, when she offered a client a cigarette to calm her down.
