During a panel for The X-Files with David Duchovny and Mitch Pileggi on January 7, 2017 at Wizard World New Orleans, Duchovny was asked about his role of DEA agent Denise Bryson. He revealed that the role was originally written for Mark Frost's friend, cult actor James Spader. However, Spader ended up having to turn down the role due to a scheduling conflict with another shoot, so the role was offered to young up-and-coming actors and David got the part. And the only thing he now regrets about his time during the first two seasons of the show is that none of his scenes were directed by Lynch.
