Thomas J.'s death is foreshadowed when a small coffin is brought into the funeral home and Vada asks if it's for a child. It's also foreshadowed again when Vada tells Shelly that Thomas J. is allergic to everything and when Thomas J. and Vada first encounter the beehive, during which Thomas J. declares "Run for your life."
