When mentioning the history of his palace, Joseph Curwen mentions than one of the previous owners was Tomas de Torquemada (1420-1498). Torquemada was a Dominican friar. He served as the Grand Inquisitor of the Spanish Inquisition from 1483 to his death in 1498. Due to his widespread use of torture to extract confessions and his systematic execution of heretics, "Torquemada's name has become synonymous with cruelty, religious intolerance and fanaticism".
