Jordi Mollà, who plays Philip II, was thirty-nine when the film was released. The historical Philip was sixty-one when the Armada set sail, and his hair had already begun to whiten in the 1570s. The king was very much afflicted with gout in his later years, so whereas a keynote of Mollà's performance is his distinctive walk, Philip spent much of 1588 walking with difficulty or unable to walk at all.
