The scene in the woods where Columbus appears to shoot Madison, but in fact deliberately misses and lies to his companions that he went through with the kill, is clearly an homage to a similar scene in the Coen brothers gangster classic "Miller's Crossing" where Tom allows Bernie to live under similar circumstances - minus the zombies. The path through the woods even looks more or less the same in both films.
