Merrin Dungey's commitment to the show Alias (2001) prevented her from appearing more frequently in this show as Stevie's mother Kitty Kenarban, to the point where she was written out of the series, and only returned for one episode in season 6, the explanation being that she and Abe got divorced. Dungey was also in the pilot episode as Malcolm's teacher, though there's no indication that they're the same character.
