Marked the first time in which the Star Trek franchise ended a season with a cliffhanger episode. This established a pattern, as all subsequent seasons (with the obvious exception of the 7th - and final) of TNG. CIffhangers would be used for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), Star Trek: Voyager (1995) and Enterprise (2001) as well. A major cliffhanger of this episode - regarding Picard's status - was truly unknown, due to whether Patrick Stewart would renew his contract beyond the show's 3rd season.
