In keeping with the theme of death and rebirth symbolized by Spock's sacrifice and the Genesis Device, Nicholas Meyer wanted to call this film "The Undiscovered Country", in reference to Prince Hamlet's description of death in "Hamlet" (c. 1599-1602) by William Shakespeare (1564-1616). However, the title was changed during editing, without his approval. He eventually got to direct a Star Trek film with that title nine years later: Rotta verso l'ignoto (1991).
