Matthieu Kassovitz was inspired to write the screenplay after reading about the murder of two young Afro-French men who were killed in police custody. Kassovitz was not from the projects nor was he raised in a rough neighborhood. However, he has said in interviews that he cannot believe a thing like that could happen in modern society. Since 1981, there have been over 300 people killed while in police custody in France. Kassowitz wanted to shed some light on the subject.
