Producer Tony Ginnane has said of the picture: ''During pre-production, [director] David [Hemmings] and I had a long debate about whether we should go gore or cerebral. We thought, wrongly as it turned out, that the market was turning and that a picture in the style of Jack Clayton's 'The Innocents' [1961] would be more appropriate than an exploitation horror film. So we went cerebral, and the film got mucked about. It's quite hard to follow, and a bit of a disappointment...''.
