"Mary's Delinquent" shares a very similar plotline with "Maude's Guest". Both have the title character sharing their home with a tough little teenage girl troublemaker from the wrong side of the tracks, in an attempt to mentor them and steer them towards a better life; and in both cases our hero ends up succeeding in spite of several setbacks. Both episodes are about traversing racial and class conflict. Both episodes co-star Tamu Blackwell as one of the delinquents; and both are about a girl named Francie. This makes sense since Mary Tyler Moore and Maude were similarly themed feminist sitcoms from the early 70s that shared many of the same staff writers, including Treva Silverman and Mary Kay Place, who worked on this episode. (Mary Kay Place was also freelancing for the Norman Lear/Tandem studios stable house when this episode was in production).
