Rian Johnson was originally considered to direct Star Wars - Il risveglio della Forza (2015). He declined due to stating he needed more time to ensure the movie would be good enough. But he agreed on Episode VIII: The Last Jedi because it would give him an extended amount of development time. Before it's release, The Last Jedi was so well received internally by Lucasfilm that Rian Johnson was offered an entire Star Wars trilogy to himself. Johnson agreed to do a trilogy but only on the condition of getting even more development time than he had for The Last Jedi to write and polish his scripts on the side of doing other projects in the meantime. Johnson also wants to do an episode of The Mandalorian and has spoken to Dave Filoni about it.
