Many pieces of Atreides furniture portray a bull. Leto's father, Paulus, fought bulls to impress his people, as his namesake grandson Paul points out. This is portrayed in the novel Dune: House Atreides. Paulus was also assassinated when his concubine arranged for the bull to be drugged. The lettering on Paulus's grave is Greek, since House Atreides is itself of Greek ancestry. They take their name from the House of Atreus. In the Prelude to Dune trilogy, it is stated that House Atriedes traced its ancestry back to the ancient House of Atreus, including King Agamemnon. Paul's middle name, Orestes, also pays homage to this. In the Legends of Dune trilogy, it is revealed that a cymek warlord took the name Agamemnon, and gave his only son, Vorian, the surname Atreides.
